Bosnia and Herzegovina: More than 36.5 million euros for Srebrenica

UNDP's international partners in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) have pledged 36.5 million euros worth of development aid for Srebrenica over the next three years.

These include the government of the Federation of BiH, the government of Serbia, Canada, Greece, the Netherlands, but also the Council of Ministers of BiH and the district of Brcko.

The pledges were made at the Srebrenica “Development Conference” which took place on 3 July. Organized by the city in collaboration with UNDP, the conference brought together a large number of development partners and UN officials. The Mayor of Srebrenica also took part in the event.

Governments also pledged to support UNDP's development activities over the next few years, including: local agriculture (Japan, Pakistan, Sweden, Turkey); the business sector (Netherlands, Norway, United States); infrastructure and social services (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece); mine action (Canada) and civil society (European Commission).

UNDP initiated its “Regional Recovery Programme for Srebrenica” in 2002. Over the next two years, it will implement projects worth US$8 million per year, in addition to its capacity-building activities.

Over the last five years, UNDP has supported the local agriculture, trained and given loans to more than 6,500 people, rebuilt 145 kilometres (90 miles) of roads, restored electricity for 1,500 families, installed water supply systems in 8 villages and provided water treatment for 2,222 households. The organization has also cleared mines on 800 hectares of land.

Srebrenica has been ravaged by the war in the Former Yugoslavia.

The Srebrenica Development Conference will be followed by a conference on developing business opportunities in the fall of 2007.
